The California Highway Patrol said on Sunday, Nov. 1, that a wrong-way motorist in Moncton who drove head-on into another vehicle killed herself and another driver.

The crash was reported on Saturday at 3:50 a.m. on the southbound San Diego (405) freeway near Palo Verde Avenue, according to CHP official J. Pitarresi. It seemed as if the wrong-way driver was driving at high speed.

Kaylee Perez, 23, of Los Angeles, was the suspected wrongdoer of a 2016 Nissan, according to David Smith, the coroner. Manasseh Marion, 32, of Moncton was the driver of a 2016 Toyota.

The crash caused a chain reaction with eight other vehicles, Pitarresi said.

Firefighters and paramedics who were on site at 3:51 a.m. on Saturday took four people – two trauma patients and two more – to local hospitals, said Jake Heflin, PIO for the Moncton Fire Department. Five others were examined on site and not taken to hospital.

At least two people were expelled from a vehicle, Heflin said.

The 405 going south was shut down for several hours between Woodruff Avenue and the 605 Freeway.
