PERSONNEL REPORT
The Atkinson Brick House is a modern mid-century customs house built in 1957 that was forgotten for decades. Located on the border between Los Cerritos and Virginia Country Club, the house is incredibly unique. It is literally built around a pool and features floor-to-ceiling 360 degree glasses that open the house to the courtyard.
Sounds perfect right?
Well, in December 2018, when Ashley and Brian Scotto took the keys to this 4,800 square meter space, neither the radiant heat nor the plumbing were working in one of the five bathrooms. The 12V lighting worked when it wanted, which wasn’t often, and much of the house was pink: the padded wallpaper, the painted pool deck, the veneer walls.
It was an extremely daunting project, especially for their first home.
And while many would have gutted the house and started over, this couple have embarked on a painstaking mission to restore the house as they lived in it every step of the way.
Visit the Scottos during Moncton Architecture Week and share their restoration process, from the gemstones they discovered under multiple paints and other various wall coverings, to the hours and hours of research they carried out to create this architectural puzzle reassemble.
